Dame Cathedral in Paris has the hunchbacked bellhop Quasimodo as his loyal
servant. Meanwhile, gypsies gather in the square in front of the cathedral
where Clopin and a beautiful woman named Esmeralda live. After seeing Esmeralda
dancing by chance, Bishop Frollo is overcome with desire for her, and the
captain of the guards, Phoebus, also falls in love with Esmeralda with his
fiancée Fleur de Lys left behind. And then a fateful tragedy unfolds from mingled

Joo-sungABOUT THE NOVELPublished in 1831 by French author Victor Hugo, the original novel
is an immortal classic that provides a majestic depiction about human beings in
the 15th century Paris who have fallen into a twisted love; it portrays
the unattainable love of Quasimodo, the hunchbacked and ugly bellhop of Notre
Dame Cathedral, for the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda, as well as the downfall
of a priest who succumbs to earthly desire and ultimately walked the road to
self-destruction. The novel is considered one of the greatest French Romantic literary
works, ranking alongside Victor Hugo’s another masterpiece “Les Misérables.” Its
timeless quality is reflected in various adaptations including movies, plays
and musicals. Notably, it portrays the chaotic society of its time, the unjust system
of punishment, and the marginalized lives of outsiders. The narrative still resonates with contemporary
audiences, offering satire on the symbols of power, the Notre Dame Cathedral
and the metropolis of Paris.
